Druridge Bay, Northumberland

Druridge Bay, Northumberland

A windy day spent on England’s north-east coast, providing plenty of colour and scenery inspiration for my art.

Grey stormy skies with waves rolling into a sandy beach with groyne.

Late winter and the wind is blowing in your face, feeling like it's going right through you, even with every layer you can fit on under your coat. It's overcast but not raining, making for a bracing, scenic coastal walk in Druridge Bay Country Park, near Amble in North East England. This stretch of coast became the inspiration for several paintings and colourways - you can't fail to be inspired with what seems like a million different tones of blues and greys in the sky and sea. Deep and dark on the horizon, suggesting a downpour on its way, to the softest grey with tinges of yellow and blue.

Stormy blue-grey skies with north sea stretching out to the horizon.

Debris is scattered all over the sand from the recent high water levels, yet the track that runs across the top of the beach is still passable. The scenery is stunning, and as well as the three miles of beach, there is also a lake, dunes and meadows, making a beautiful backdrop for a walk.

Grey skies, a grassy headland with sandy beach below as the tide comes in.
